Ukraine and Russia: What You Need To Know

INTERNATIONAL: Russian forces intensified their attacks with barrages of heavy artillery to capture a key Ukrainian city in the southeastern region of Donbas; whose full takeover Moscow's top diplomat said was now an "unconditional priority"

Here are some things you need to know.

Russian shelling has destroyed the entire critical infrastructure in the Ukrainian city of Sievierodonetsk, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday (May 29).

The battle for Sievierodonetsk, which lies on the eastern bank of the Siverskyi Donets River, is in the spotlight as Russia ekes out slow but solid gains in the part of the country known as the Donbas, comprising Luhansk and Donetsk regions close to the Russian border.

A warehouse in Bakhmut, in the Donetsk region, was reportedly hit by a missile strike for a second consecutive day on Saturday (May 28), according to local authorities.

No casualties were reported by authorities, but rubble was seen strewn across the street on Sunday (May 29) in front of the severely damaged warehouse.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited Ukrainian troops on the front lines in the northeastern Kharkiv region on Sunday (May 29).

The visit marks his first official appearance outside Kyiv region since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24. He was seen handing out awards and gifts to army personnel. The official presidential website cited him as saying to them "You risk your lives for us all and for our country."

The president's chief of staff added that 31% of Kharkiv region's territory was currently occupied by Russia, and a further 5% had been taken back by Ukraine having been occupied earlier.

A solar power plant in Ukraine's Merefa in the Kharkiv region was destroyed by a missile strike on Saturday (May 28), the solar plant station manager, Volodymyr Ranchkovskyi, said.

Local authorities said there were no casualties from the strike that happened early Saturday (May 28) morning, and power supply had been restored. Reuters could not immediately verify who was responsible for the strike.

“There is no military infrastructure here. It's just a solar power plant,” Ranchkovskyi said.

Local media has reported shelling over Merefa in the past couple of days.

Ukrainian servicemen patrolled trenches in the frontline Donetsk region Sunday (May 29), as they fight off Russian attempts to capture more land in the eastern part of Ukraine.

Dmytro, a former English teacher, said his biggest fear was being told to ''stop fighting“.

''A negotiated settlement can only happen on Ukrainian terms and at present if it happened it would be horror,” he said, adding that such a move could end President’s Zelenskiy’s career.

Ukraine has started receiving Harpoon anti-ship missiles from Denmark, arms that will bolster forces fighting Russia's invasion, Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov said.

A branch of Ukraine's Orthodox Church that remained loyal to Moscow after a 2019 schism has said it will break with the Russian church over the country's invasion of Ukraine.

Churchgoers in Kyiv on Sunday (May 29) said they accepted the split but were concerned about unity among Orthodox believers in Ukraine.
